{coaching FAQ's}

Is coaching legit?  Can't anyone call themselves a coach?

Yes and yes!  Coaching is a rapidly growing segment of the "helping industry" and is utilized by elite athletes, Fortune 500 business leaders, business owners, familys, individuals, entrepreneurs, housewives, college students, folks looking to make a career move and anyone else that you can possibly imagine.  There is a lot of "life skill" that we've missed along the way, and people are finding that good coaching can bridge the  gaps.  Good coaching is the key.  Anyone can call themselves a coach.  Your coaching experience will likely be as legit as the coach you are using.  We've been utilizing a coaching style with many people for over 60 combined years of campus ministry, local church work and professional counseling experience.  Sensing the need to create a space dedicated to the specialty and flexibility of coaching, the Elbow Tree Group started FOXHOLE in 2018, due to the demand from clients ready to start!
Coaching vs. Counseling?
Coaching is a different process than traditional counseling.  Consider which is the best fit for you.

Counseling may be a better fit if one or more of the following are true:
  • you have been referred to get counseling by a school, university, psychiatrist, Department of Children's Services, court or other authority system related to your situation

  • you are in a legal situation of any sort and that situation could be affected by the type of help you are receiving

  • you are on psychotropic medication or have a mental health diagnosis

  • you need to file insurance or pay with an Health Savings Account (HSA) card

  • you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or others

  • you are experiencing any type of hallucination (seeing, hearing or feeling things that aren't really there)

  • you anticipate that your situation has legal ramifications and your treatment may require a professional counselor to give input

  • your situation involves something with more "horsepower" - ex. recovering from abuse, dealing with a current infidelity crisis,

Coaching may be a better fit if one or more of the following are true:
  • none of the "counseling" criteria above apply to you - or they once existed and have now resolved

  • you do not need mental health related assistance (ex. PTSD, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, etc)

  • you want to work on things that are solution oriented, goal oriented, achievement oriented in nature!

  • your situation involves "heart and soul" dynamics or things that are rooted in Christian discipleship

  • if anything on the "CLIMB IN" page sounds like you!
Does my health insurance cover coaching?

No.  Health insurance covers medical conditions that are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders and are being treated by a licensed mental healthcare clinician or a physician.  Even though some of us here at FOXHOLE are also licensed mental health care clinicians, we are operating under a different scope as coaches.  We will help you get linked up with a licensed mental health care clinician or physician if things need to be treated that are outside the scope of our coaching relationship.
Can you be my coach and my counselor at the same time?

No.  It is best for us to operate out of one modality at at time.  If you are coaching with us and would like to do some counseling work, we can help you get linked up with the right person in your area.  Likewise, if you are a counseling client within the Elbow Tree Group and would like to terminate that relationship and begin coaching with us here, we can do that!
